Village-like, green, and still close to the city.
Diemen literally borders Amsterdam, but it feels very different: an independent municipality with its own village centre, a weekly market on the square and much more space per square metre. For anyone who wants to let go of Amsterdam a little without really missing the city, this is one of the most logical places to look.

Until well into the nineteenth century, Diemen was a farming village on the edge of Amsterdam, with De Hoop church on the Hartveldseweg (built in 1787, replaced by the current building in 1910) at its centre. Between 1866 and 1940 the village turned into a suburb of Amsterdam, with a mixed population and small-scale industry.
That village feel has never completely disappeared: every Wednesday there is still a weekly market on the Diemerplein, and the municipality has more than 33,000 residents, spread over the historic core and newer areas such as Plantage de Sniep.

Diemen has been building for decades, with Plantage de Sniep as the best-known example: between 2003 and 2019, 620 homes were added there on a former industrial site, laid out green and with a lot of attention to play areas. Some 71% of the homes there are owner-occupied, with an average WOZ value of about €737,000.
Compared with Amsterdam itself, in Diemen you usually get more living space and more often a garden for the same budget, with the city still within cycling distance.

The Diemerplein shopping centre is the beating heart of the municipality: more than 60 shops, with Albert Heijn XL and Vomar as the regular supermarkets, a covered shopping area and an underground car park with 400 spaces. Every Wednesday morning there is the weekly market, and on the first Sunday of the month the shops are open too.
For greenery and relaxation, the Diemerbos is close by: cycling and walking paths, the House of Bird café, and in summer the 22Fest festival.

Diemen has two metro stations on line 53, Diemen Zuid and Verrijn Stuartweg, and the train also stops at Diemen Zuid. Within a quarter of an hour you are in the middle of Amsterdam.
By car you are well placed too: Diemen is close to the junction of the A1, A9 and A10, something you do not easily benefit from in Amsterdam itself.

Diemen is ideal for families: green, quiet, good schools nearby and more space than in Amsterdam for a comparable budget. Anyone who appreciates the village atmosphere, with a weekly market and its own church square, will also quickly feel at home here.
Looking instead for the bustle and nightlife of the city centre? Then Amsterdam Centrum or De Pijp is a more logical choice. But for peace with the city around the corner, Diemen is hard to beat.
