The Rivierenbuurt is the quiet, green counterpart to the bustle of De Pijp and Centrum. The area is part of Plan Zuid, the 1920s extension plan by architect H.P. Berlage, and owes its name to the streets that are each named after a Dutch river. The area was built in the 1920s according to a strict street plan: three long avenues that meet at the Victorieplein, once the Daniël Willinkplein. On that square stands the Wolkenkrabber, the twelve-storey block of flats by architect J.F. Staal that was considered one of the first high-rise projects in the Netherlands at the time. Architects such as Michel de Klerk and Piet Kramer built here in the characteristic Amsterdam School style: expressive brickwork, rounded bay windows and graceful details.
Before the war, a large part of Amsterdam's Jewish community lived here, including the Frank family on the Merwedeplein.

Do not expect little canal houses here, but wide 1920s and 1930s blocks with lots of brick and original details. Most homes are spacious apartments and two-storey upper-floor homes; in the quieter streets you will also find ground-floor homes with a garden.
The Rivierenbuurt is one of the more expensive areas of Amsterdam-Zuid: the combination of space, peace and a good location makes the area popular with buyers who do not want to compromise on square metres.
Shopping, eating and relaxing
The Maasstraat and the Rijnstraat are the area's shopping streets, with bakers, butchers and specialist shops that you have long stopped finding in the centre. On Thursdays there is the weekly market on the Rooseveltlaan.
For a drink on a terrace you go to one of the regular neighbourhood cafés, and around the RAI and the Europaplein there is always something going on. On the south side of the area is the Martin Luther King Park, one of the greenest places in the city.

Tram 4 runs right through the area, from the Victorieplein via the Rijnstraat to Centraal Station and RAI station. Tram 12 stops at the Europaplein.
Europaplein metro station on the Noord/Zuidlijn and RAI station, with metro 50 and 51 and the train, are within walking distance and take you to the Zuidas or the centre in a few minutes. By car you are well placed too: the A10 ring road is quickly reached.
