Nowhere in Amsterdam can you see so clearly how an area can renew itself as in Zuidoost. What started as the Bijlmermeer, a high-rise area full of optimism about the city of the future, has grown into one of the most diverse and fastest-changing parts of Amsterdam. Around Bijlmer ArenA station, with the Johan Cruijff ArenA and Ziggo Dome around the corner, Zuidoost has long stopped feeling like a suburb.
Amsterdam-Zuidoost began as the Bijlmermeer, designed in the 1960s by urban planner Siegfried Nassuth as a city of the future: high-rise flats in a recognisable honeycomb pattern, surrounded by greenery. Between 1968 and 1975 thirteen thousand homes were built this way, with flats such as Kleiburg and Grubbehoeve as the best-known examples.
Since the 1990s, half of those honeycomb flats have been demolished and replaced by lower homes with their own gardens. That is how Zuidoost grew into one of the most diverse places in the city.
If you are looking for a home in Zuidoost, you will find a mix that is unique in Amsterdam. Some of the original gallery flats are still there, sometimes thoroughly renovated like Kleiburg, divided into separate homes with their own front door. In addition, a lot of new housing has been built: low-rise with gardens and, in recent years, new apartments around squares such as the Anton de Komplein.
Zuidoost has been the most affordable district of Amsterdam for years, with the lowest price per square metre in the city. For anyone who wants to buy here without the prices of Centrum or Zuid, that is exactly the reason to come and look.
The beating heart of the area is the Amsterdamse Poort shopping centre, the largest in Zuidoost, with well-known chains alongside independent businesses. Right next to it, on the Anton de Komplein, a lively market is held on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays with products from all over the world, from Surinamese and Ghanaian groceries to fresh fish.
For food and culture, Zuidoost is the most international area of Amsterdam, with dishes from Suriname, Ghana and the Antilles that you hardly find elsewhere. For sport and relaxation, the Nelson Mandelapark, the green heart of the area, is the regular spot.
In Zuidoost, water, film, music and shopping are all close together. At the Gaasperplas, in the Gaasperpark, there are two swimming beaches and you can walk a loop around the water. For films, go to Pathé Arena on the ArenA Boulevard, which has an IMAX screen. Close by is AFAS Live, the concert hall formerly known as the Heineken Music Hall. And for everything to do with home and interiors, there is Villa ArenA, the home furnishing centre next to the Johan Cruijff ArenA.
Zuidoost is exceptionally well connected. Bijlmer ArenA station is one of the largest hubs in the city, with metro lines 50, 53 and 54, trains to the rest of the country and buses to Schiphol. The Ganzenhoef and Kraaiennest metro stations are also in the middle of the area.
By car you are quickly on the A9 and A2, and Schiphol is a fifteen-minute drive. If you work in Amsterdam but do not necessarily need to live in the centre, you get into the city faster from here than from many other areas.
Foto: Richardkiwi, CC BY-SA 3.0 Zuidoost mainly attracts people who take a practical view of housing: first-time buyers and young families who want to buy in Amsterdam without canal-belt prices, and people who feel at home in an area with so many cultures together. Almost a third of the residents are under twenty.
Looking for a nineteenth-century canal house or a quiet, village-like atmosphere? Then Centrum or Amstelveen is a better place to look. But if you find space, affordability and an international atmosphere more important than a canal view, you will soon feel at home in Zuidoost.
