Selling or buying a home in De Pijp. We know these streets.
Compact, busy, and never boring.
Nowhere in Amsterdam do you hear so many languages mixed together on a morning as at the Albert Cuyp market. De Pijp is where a nineteenth-century working-class neighbourhood grew into one of the best-loved places in the city: densely built, a little chaotic and exactly why it is so attractive.
The character of De Pijp
The name comes from the long, straight streets that are reminiscent of pipe stems (pijpenstelen), laid out at the end of the nineteenth century for the workers of the fast-growing city. De Pijp has long since stopped being a working-class area: students, artists and internationals gave it its current character, international and always on the move.
The Albert Cuyp market, since 1905 the largest daily market in Europe with more than 260 stalls, is still its beating heart.
Living in De Pijp: homes and price level
The housing consists largely of narrow, deep buildings from around 1900, often divided into several small homes. Do not expect spacious townhouses, but compact apartments: studios and two- or three-room homes, sometimes with a roof terrace on the top floor.
Because of its popularity and its location close to the centre, De Pijp is one of the more expensive areas of Amsterdam. That is exactly why acting fast here is often the difference between getting the keys or not.
Shopping, eating and relaxing
Besides the Albert Cuyp market, the Ferdinand Bolstraat, the Gerard Doustraat and the Van Woustraat are the area's regular shopping streets. For food and drink, the Frans Halsstraat is the place to be, with terraces that are full all year round.
The Sarphatipark, named after the nineteenth-century initiator Samuel Sarphati, is the green heart of the neighbourhood: the regular spot for a morning run or an afternoon on the grass.
Getting around from De Pijp
De Pijp metro station, under the Ferdinand Bolstraat, is on the Noord/Zuidlijn and takes you to Centraal Station or Amsterdam Zuid in a few minutes. Trams 3, 12 and 24 stop on the same street.
The area is excellent for cycling, the centre is ten minutes away by bike, and by car you are quickly on the A10 ring road.
Who is De Pijp right for
De Pijp mainly attracts first-time buyers and young professionals looking for a compact apartment close to the centre, and internationals who love a neighbourhood with a lot of diversity. Looking for a spacious family home with a garden? Then Buitenveldert or Nieuw-West is a better place to look.
But if you would rather live in the middle of city life, with the market, the park and the bars and restaurants within walking distance, this is the perfect place.
