Until 1964 Amstelveen was called Nieuwer-Amstel, and it began as a peat village around the Poel, the lake that gave the municipality its name. The densely populated northern part went to Amsterdam in 1896, while the Oude Dorp with its characteristic Dorpskerk remained independent.
From the 1930s onwards, Amstelveen earned its reputation as a genteel place to live, with spacious villa neighbourhoods such as Elsrijk in the north-west. That image has always stuck: prosperous, green and just that bit quieter than the city next door.
Living in Amstelveen: homes and price level
From the stately 1930s homes in Elsrijk to the more spacious family homes in Westwijk and Bovenkerk: Amstelveen offers a wide mix of housing types, generally with more space and greenery per home than in Amsterdam itself. Amstelveen is one of the more expensive municipalities in the region, with asking prices well above the national average.
Supply is tight, especially for detached homes, but there is also a lot of new building: newer developments around the Stadshart and in Westwijk have added homes for a range of target groups in recent years.

The Stadshart Amstelveen is the beating heart of the municipality: more than two hundred shops around the Stadsplein, with De Bijenkorf as its eye-catcher, and a cinema, theatre and music venue close at hand. Every Tuesday there is a farmers' market, and on Fridays a large market with some two hundred and twenty stalls.
Nearby you will find the Cobra Museum, dedicated to the post-war Cobra art movement. And thanks to the large international community, including one of the largest Japanese communities in the Netherlands, you will also find a remarkable number of Asian restaurants and shops in and around the Stadshart.

Amstelveen is very well connected to Amsterdam. Tram 5 runs directly from the Stadshart via Amsterdam Zuid to Amsterdam Centraal, and the Amsteltram (line 25) connects Amsterdam Zuid via Westwijk with Uithoorn. Since March 2026, tram 6 also runs between Zuid and Westwijk during rush hour, as an extra connection alongside lines 5 and 25.
By car you are close to the A9, A4 and the A10 ring road, and Schiphol is about fifteen minutes away. For anyone working in Amsterdam-Zuid or on the Zuidas, Amstelveen is a logical base.

Amstelveen is ideal for families looking for peace and space without really missing the city: greenery, quiet streets and the Amsterdamse Bos within cycling distance. It is also a familiar place for internationals, with a large Japanese community, international companies within reach and Schiphol nearby.
Looking instead for the bustle of a nightlife area in the middle of the city? Then Amsterdam Centrum or De Pijp is a more logical choice. But for anyone looking for peace with the city around the corner, Amstelveen is hard to beat.
