Nowhere does Amsterdam smell so much of the rest of the world as at the Dappermarkt, where every morning a mix of languages, spices and stalls comes together. Oost is the area where the former Indische Buurt, with street names after places in the former Dutch East Indies, has grown into one of the most diverse and fastest-changing parts of the city. Long-time residents and newcomers simply live side by side here, and that gives the area an energy you will not find anywhere else in Amsterdam.
The character of Oost
The streets in the Indische Buurt are named after islands and places in the former Dutch East Indies, laid out at the beginning of the twentieth century to house the fast-growing city. A little further south lies the Dapperbuurt, traditionally a working-class neighbourhood around the Dappermarkt, which has been open every day for more than a century.
What characterises the area today is its diversity: in Oost, people with roots all over the world simply live together, and you can taste and see that everywhere, from the Asian grocery shops on the Javastraat to the many cuisines around the Oosterpark.
Living in Oost: homes and price level
The housing consists largely of compact flats from the beginning of the twentieth century, built in brick blocks for the workers of the time. Many of those homes have been renovated into pleasant apartments over the past decades, often with a balcony or a view over a shared inner garden.
Oost is now one of the areas where demand far exceeds supply. What once counted as an affordable alternative to Centrum and Zuid is now one of the areas where overbidding is the rule rather than the exception.

The Dappermarkt, open Monday to Saturday, has been the beating heart of the area for more than a century: from fresh fish to stroopwafels, you will find it all here. On the nearby Javastraat there are more and more quirky shops, coffee bars and restaurants among the traditional Asian grocery shops.
The Oosterpark, laid out by garden architect Leonard Springer, is the green heart of the area and the regular spot for a run or an afternoon on the grass. On the edge of the park is the Wereldmuseum, formerly the Tropenmuseum, in one of the most beautiful buildings in Oost.

Tram 14 runs right through the area, from Centraal Station via the Dappermarkt to Muiderpoort station, and tram 19 stops on the other side of the Oosterpark. Wibautstraat metro station, on lines 51, 53 and 54, is within cycling distance and takes you to the Zuidas or the centre in a few stops.
Muiderpoort station has its own train connections, and by bike you are in the centre within ten minutes. By car, the A10 ring road is close via the Zeeburgerdijk.
Who is Oost right for
Oost mainly attracts first-time buyers, young professionals and internationals who love an area with character and do not mind a bit of noise. The mix of old and new residents makes the area remarkably open, with a sense of community that has disappeared in many other parts of the city.
Looking for more peace, a garden and wide streets for children to play in? Then look just a little further, towards Watergraafsmeer. But if you love an area that never stands still, Oost is just right.
