Amsterdam-Zuid is the part of Amsterdam located south and southwest of the Singelgracht(Stadhouderskade). The northern boundary is formed by (the northern border of) Vondelpark and the western boundary by Westlandgracht. The eastern boundary is the Amstel River. The southern boundary is the Kalfjeslaan, which forms the border with the municipality of Amstelveen.

The construction of the southern city extensions began in the last quarter of the 19th century, with the annexation of the area that until then belonged to the neighboring municipality of Nieuwer-Amstel (now Amstelveen), with the construction of De Pijp, and the area around the Rijksmuseum(Museumkwartier) and the Willemspark neighborhood. This area was also referred to as Old South.
In 1917, Berlage came up with Plan Zuid, which included wider streets with apartment buildings for the middle class. Sculptors are also involved in the plans from the beginning to fit their work into public spaces.
Between 1920 and 1940, new urban extensions were built on the territory of the former municipality of Nieuwer Amstel. These include the Nieuwe Pijp, the Diamantbuurt and Plan Zuid: Rivierenbuurt, surroundings Beethovenstraat and the Stadionbuurt. This area was also referred to as New South.
Since 1987/1990, these neighborhoods formed the city districts of De Pijp, Rivierenbuurt and Zuid. The Hoofddorpplein neighborhood, west of the Schinkel, has been part of the Zuid district since 1990. After the merger of De Pijp and Zuid in 1998, it was district Oud-Zuid until April 30, 2010.
Starting in 1958, the “garden city” of Buitenveldert was built, a separate district since 1987, until it merged with the then Rivierenbuurt district in 1998 to form ZuiderAmstel district. Also part of ZuiderAmstel between 1998 and 2010 were the Beatrix Park, the Princess Irene neighborhood built since the 1960s south of the Zuider Amstel Canal, the Zuidas area on either side of the A10 Ring Road with the Station Zuid and the IJsbaanpad.
Amsterdam-Zuid has the highest average disposable income per household of all Amsterdam boroughs: 34,900 euros compared to 29,600 on average in Amsterdam (2007).
