From the open kitchen to real estate.
I'm Lisa, an estate agent at Makelaar in Amsterdam since September 2025. I cycle all over the city for viewings, for sellers and for buyers. Alongside my work, I study Built Environment, specialising in Asset Management.
Before I became an estate agent, I was a chef in a hotel. I worked in every section of the kitchen, but most of all in the open kitchen. At the chef's table you'd chat with the guests and take them along in what you were making for them. That's where I learned how important the experience is, and in real estate it's no different. Buying or selling a home is a big step, and the journey there matters just as much as the signature at the civil-law notary.
During my studies, my interest in the housing market grew. Buying a home seems to me just about the most wonderful thing there is, and helping people with it feels incredibly worthwhile. Before I started here, I took a good look around at estate agents in Amsterdam. At this agency, the personal approach appealed to me straight away.
I look as if I'm going to live there myself.
My days are varied. I do viewings of our homes for sale and go along with buying clients. I collect the documents for a complete file, write property descriptions and help decide the asking price. When a buying client wants to make an offer, I work out the best offer and negotiate with the selling agent. And the appointment at the civil-law notary always feels like a celebration.
At a viewing, I look at a home as if I were going to live there myself. There was once a bedroom that was very dark, with a low ceiling. In a twenty-minute viewing you don't always notice that, but you do sleep there every night. So I say so. Clients often tell me they appreciate that I think along critically, because it helps them see more clearly what they do and don't want.
At this agency I've learned how important it is to really listen and sense what someone wants from the heart. And to stay personal and simply be yourself.
Cooking, cycling along the Amstel and Noord.
In my free time I still love to cook, and I cycle a lot, preferably along the Amstel. You'll often find me at Brouwerij 't IJ or De Hallen, and I think Noord is a wonderful part of the city. I regularly go to Friesland to visit family.
