Foto: Michielverbeek, CC BY-SA 4.0 Buitenveldert is the southernmost corner of Amsterdam, between the Zuidas and the Kalfjeslaan, with the Amstel river to the east and the Amsterdamse Bos to the west. The area is made up of two neighbourhoods, Buitenveldert-West and Buitenveldert-Oost, with just over 22,000 residents between them.
The name comes from the Binnendijkse Buitenvelderse polder, land that belonged to the municipality of Nieuwer-Amstel until 1921. The area was built as part of the Algemeen Uitbreidingsplan (General Expansion Plan) drawn up in 1934 under Cornelis van Eesteren, in which urban planner Jakoba Mulder played a major role: light, air and space, with grass and trees between the housing blocks. The first stone was laid on 2 June 1958, and by the mid-1970s the area was largely complete.
The street names follow a system too: the main streets are named after the baljuws (bailiffs) of Amstelland, and many others after Dutch provinces, castles and country estates, such as the Zeelandstraat, the Drentestraat and, of course, the Kastelenstraat.
The housing is typical of a post-war garden city: gallery and walk-up flats in long, straight rows with lawns in front, terraced houses with their own garden and the occasional residential tower. Most of it dates from the 1960s and early 1970s: often practical flats with a balcony and a view of greenery rather than of the neighbours across the street.
Right through the middle of the area runs the Gijsbrecht van Aemstelpark, more than two kilometres long, designed by Wim Boer in the same clean lines as the streets around it. Its central section has been a national monument since 2015. Prices are at the level you would expect in Zuid, but if you have been looking in Oud-Zuid or the Rivierenbuurt, the same budget often gets you more space and more greenery here.
Foto: Arthena, CC BY-SA 3.0 For your shopping you go to the Gelderlandplein. Mayor Ivo Samkalden opened it in 1968 as an open-air neighbourhood shopping centre, and it has had a roof since 1997. Smaller options are Rooswijck on the Buitenveldertselaan and the Kastelenstraat, the heart of the Jewish community, with its own shops, places to eat and synagogues.
On the east side lies the Amstelpark, with its rose garden, the Rhododendron Valley, the Glazen Huis (Glass House) and the little Amstel train for the kids. Walk on to the Amstel and you reach the Riekermolen, a windmill from 1636, with a bronze Rembrandt beside it sketching the river.
Buitenveldert revolves around the Kastelenstraat and the green spaces around it. On the Kastelenstraat you'll find Broodhuys Meijer, a family bakery that bakes without additives, and lePita, for falafel, hummus and shawarma. With children, head to the playground in the Amstelpark, with a petting farm next door. And if you really want to unwind, go to Spa Zuiver on the edge of the Amsterdamse Bos, with saunas and a swimming pool.
Two trams run along the Buitenveldertselaan: tram 5, via Station Zuid and the Leidseplein to the Van Hallstraat, and tram 25, via Station Zuid and De Pijp to the Flevopark. Heading south, both go to Amstelveen, and line 25 continues all the way to Uithoorn. At Station Zuid you change to metro lines 50, 51 and 52 and to the train to Schiphol.
The A10 ring road is just around the corner, and Schiphol is so close that one of its runways is named after the area: the Buitenveldertbaan, because the approach route passes over it. Dutch singer Frans Halsema was already singing about it in 1969 in his song Zondagmiddag Buitenveldert.
Buitenveldert suits families who want space without leaving the city. There are plenty of schools, from the Christelijke Scholengemeenschap Buitenveldert to the South Campus of the Amsterdam International Community School, open since 2022. If you work at the VU, at Amsterdam UMC on De Boelelaan or on the Zuidas, you are there in a few minutes. Many older Amsterdammers choose the area too: more than one in five residents is over 65. And on a Sunday you can cycle along the Kalfjeslaan, a road that already appears on sixteenth-century maps, following the border with Amstelveen.
To be honest: when the wind is from the west you will hear the planes, and in the evening it is mostly quiet here. If you want cafés and nightlife around the corner, De Pijp or Oud-West will suit you better.

Buitenveldert is not cheap, it is in Zuid after all. Compared with Oud-Zuid or the Rivierenbuurt, though, the same budget often gets you more space, a balcony or garden and plenty of greenery around you.

Trams 5 and 25 run along the Buitenveldertselaan to Station Zuid, where you change to metro lines 50, 51 and 52 and to the train to Schiphol. During rush hour, tram 6 also runs between Station Zuid and Westwijk.
