Living at Olympiaplein: classic, green and typical South
A square full of character
Whoever walks onto Olympiaplein feels it immediately: this is a piece of Amsterdam with class and tranquility. The stately buildings, spacious greenery and elegant atmosphere exude the ’20s. Yet the square is bustling with life – with schools, sports clubs, coffee shops and the Vondelpark within walking distance. Not surprisingly, living on Olympiaplein is high on the list of many Amsterdam residents.
A little history
Olympiaplein is part of Plan Zuid, the famous urban design of architect H.P. Berlage. Around 1928 – the year of the Olympic Games in Amsterdam – the square was constructed as a central point in the Stadion neighborhood. The monumental homes were designed with an eye for detail: brick, ornate bay windows and beautiful porches. Today, that architecture still exudes timeless allure.
The location: quiet, but central
Olympiaplein is ideally located in Amsterdam-Zuid, between Stadionweg and Apollolaan. Within ten minutes you can cycle to the Zuidas or the Pijp area, and via the A10 ring road you can leave the city in no time. Public transportation is excellent: streetcar 24 stops around the corner and takes you directly to the center or Zuid station.
The neighborhood itself is surprisingly quiet, despite its central location. Around the square is a leafy residential area where children can play safely and residents know each other. That village feel is exactly what appeals to many families and expats.
Stores and amenities
On and around Olympiaplein you will find a pleasant mix of stores and restaurants. Think Supermarkets, Brasserie Van Dam, Le Fournil for fresh baguettes and the Olympic Gym for sports enthusiasts. Schools are also plentiful – from the British School to the Amsterdam Lyceum.
On Fridays, the small farmers’ market in the adjacent Minerva Square is a regular attraction. Fresh bread, flowers, cheese – overlooking the monumental facades. And do you want some more extensive shopping? Beethoven Street is around the corner with upscale boutiques, cafes and delis.
