The area is part of Plan Zuid, the 1920s extension plan by architect H.P. Berlage, and owes its name to the streets that are each named after a Dutch river. On that square stands the Wolkenkrabber, the twelve-storey block of flats by architect J.F. Staal that was considered one of the first high-rise projects in the Netherlands at the time.
