After the war, a complete new city rose here at great speed, the Westelijke Tuinsteden (Western Garden Cities), with the Sloterplas as its beating heart. Amsterdam annexed Sloten in 1921 and in 1935 adopted the General Extension Plan by urban planner Cornelis van Eesteren: a complete new city based on the garden-city idea, spaciously laid out and surrounded by greenery.\n\nAfter the war, construction began, starting in Slotermeer, which was opened by Queen Juliana herself in 1952. Geuzenveld, Slotervaart and Osdorp followed.
