Canals and stately canal houses, surely that is what Amsterdam is best known for. The medieval city limits of this Mokum followed the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal, the Mint, the Kloveniersburgwal, the Zeedijk and again toward the IJ. In the sixteenth century, the population increased sharply and in the seventeenth century the construction of the ring of canals began. The Heren- Keizers- and Prinsengracht were constructed at the same time, up to the height of Leidsestraat. Behind it was built a working-class neighborhood where crafts were allowed to be carried out, the Jordaan. At the end of the 17th century, the circle as we know it today was completed, the latest being the completion of the Nieuwe Heren- Keizers- and Prinsengracht towards the Plantage neighborhood. The ring of canals is currently a Unesco World Heritage Site.
Through history, the layout of downtown has become the recognizable half circle. Nowadays it has been extended to the Funenpark towards East, thus immediately revealing the versatility of this piece of the city. From new construction to medieval, small apartments to stately canal houses, urban to park-like, you’ll find it all in Amsterdam Center. Amsterdam Center, of course, also has several neighborhoods. The medieval center is called the Binnenstad, beyond it you will find the Lastage, the canal belt, Kadijken, Weteringbuurt, the Jordaan, the Plantage, Kattenburg and the Funenpark, among others
The -cultural- amenities are second to none and make the center a unique area. There are many museums, schools and the University, music venues such as the Muziekgebouw aan het IJ and the Bimhuis, Paradiso, the Melkweg and, of course, the Stopera. In terms of shopping, the center has the famous Kalverstraat, Nieuwendijk and Leidsestraat but also the Haarlemmerstraat – voted the nicest shopping street in the Netherlands and the 9 streets – that nice area between the Singel and the Prinsengracht at the height of the Spui. Furthermore, there are of course the Bijenkorf and Magnaplaza, and Leidseplein has a new attraction with the Apple flagship store.
Nightlife in the center is second to none with Leidseplein, Rembrandtplein and the many cafes and restaurants in the area – something for everyone and closing times late into the night. In short: Amsterdam Center, the place where living, working and going out come together.
